Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems
Michaud Law Group is at the forefront of powering the grid of the future with battery energy storage. Battery energy storage systems convert electrical energy from a power network into a form that can be stored. Storage can be performed in different ways and for varying amounts of time. The energy is then converted back to electrical energy and deployed for use. Battery energy storage is critical to a 100% clean energy future. Like all energy, renewable energy is variable, so pairing solar and wind systems with energy storage adds additional resilience to the energy grid system.
The firm is well-versed in various energy storage products for various applications based on location and the required duration for which the energy needs to be stored. Grid-scale energy utilizes a wide variety of technologies that address different applications. Lithium-ion batteries are electrochemical storage solutions, including advanced chemistry, flow, and capacitors. They are one of the fastest-growing segments of the energy storage market and supply 99 percent of new storage capacity today. The firm is collaborating with a client to develop an inner-city 600 MW battery energy storage system with large-scale solar.
In addition to Lithium-ion batteries as an electrochemical storage solution, we are collaborating with a client on thermal storage as a promising new long-duration energy storage technology with many uses, similar to pumped hydro. This emerging technology captures heat and cold air to create energy on demand or offset energy needs. The most common occurrence of this technology is liquid air energy or cryogenic energy storage. Instead of storing energy electrochemically, like a battery, this technology stores energy as liquid air, mostly nitrogen, like the earth’s atmosphere. Liquid air storage shares many attractive characteristics with pumped hydro and can provide similar grid services without the geographic constraints inherent in pumped hydro applications. These systems provide highly scalable and long-duration solutions. Michaud Law Group collaborates with clients to solve legal and regulatory challenges to creative and innovative energy storage development in the Northeast.
